Men Lose Testosterone From Lack of Sleep

Men: a word to the wise about getting your 40 winks. Researchers in the U.S. found that men’s testosterone levels fall significantly when they don’t get adequate sleep at night as this article discusses.

Testosterone has a sexual function but also contributes to muscle and bone growth and keep guys active, the researchers noted.

The study included 10 “healthy, fit” men, the article noted. The men received 9 hours sleep per night for three consecutive nights. After that, sleep was restricted to 5 hours. The result: 10-15% lower testosterone levels during the day following deprived sleep.

Testosterone operates as a  “rev your engine” hormone and is a part of getting oneself in gear for the day, no matter what’s been planned – including one’s work performance and other daily requirements.

On less sleep (and producing less testosterone), the test subjects reported they felt less vigorous. This was consistent with the testosterone results, which were obtained by blood tests taken during the day.

So be a man…curl up in a comfortable and supportive bed tonight and get the rest you need. And if you don’t have one we can recommend a Tempur Visco Elastic “Memory Foam” Mattress.

Get Kids on a Back-to-School Sleep Schedule Now, Experts Advise

Yesterday I was thumbing my way through a few hundred TV channels when I came across something that gave me pause: a back-to-school commercial.

Yes. Really. In the middle of summer!

Right, so that’s not a total shock or anything. Many retail industries get their start on changing seasons at least two months ahead. And back-to-school is huge for stores, with new clothing, pens and pencils, notebooks and uniforms being purchased in advance of a brand new school year. Snack and breakfast cereal companies also cash in at this time, so we’ll be hearing from them in short order, too.

One thing many parents don’t prepare their children for in the fall is getting back to a school night sleep schedule. (Raising hand hesitantly; looking slightly guilty over here…) That means the first two or three weeks of school can be a tangle of overtired youths trying to wrap their out-of-practice brains around the strict schedule of the school year.

I really liked these tips.

They contained a surprise or two, such as how much sleep a young child really does need. I think as parents, we often underestimate that. So start weaning your child off her free for all late night schedule now. The transition will be much easier, and back-to-school will be fun and exiting for your child rather than one big overtired yawn.

News: One in Eight Fall Asleep at the Wheel; Apnoea Blamed

Even more reason to get a good night’s sleep: one in eight drivers has dozed off behind the wheel of a car during the past 12 months, a new report says.

Yikes.

But apparently that bit of news isn’t scary enough. The study, performed by Brake & Cambridge, also found that two- to 30-second sleep intervals, called “microsleeps,” may not be noticed by the driver.

Okay, double yikes.

About 25% of drivers who did realize a snooze was coming on continued to drive anyway, which isn’t so surprising; not many people on their way to work, an important meeting or on the way home to friends and family will pull over to take a brief nap.

The study linked tiredness to a number of factors, but obstructive sleep apnoea during nighttime sleep stood out as a biggie. Apnoea sufferers may not realize they’re receiving interrupted sleep, since the brief periods of obstructed or halted breathing may not full awaken the individual.

Our advice? If you’re experiencing drowsiness during the day, see your doctor. There could be something going on behind the scenes you’re not even aware of. And though it goes without saying, don’t get behind the wheel if you already know the lulling hum and gentle rhythm of the road may put you into snooze land.

Also treat yourself to an new bed which helps support you better and helps to sleep such as one of our Relaxsan Orthopaedic Mattresses.

As the article stated, “It’s a matter of life and death.”  And really, when it comes to sleepy driving, it is. Be careful on the road, friends. We want to see you safe and happy.

Interesting…Sleep Positions and Relationship Attitude

Are you happy and secure in your relationship? Or is there something missing? Climb into bed and find out, experts say.

Come now, clean up those thoughts: we meant you and your spouse’s sleep positions. Dr Pam Spurr gave a report stating the position that you and your loved one fall asleep in can reveal quite a bit about your relationship. We found it interesting and very revealing.

For instance, the spoon position is actually protective to the one being spooned (male or female), and when the spoon-ee is the woman, it points to a traditional relationship. And though back-to-back without touching signals the obvious – a lack of connection – it can also simply mean independence, though it can create emotional space over time.

Dr Spurr also addressed less traditional sleep options for couples, including spooning with the woman rather than the man behind, and its meaning of a very nuturing relationship. This slide show is fun and an easy, quick read, so have a look and perhaps find out what your and your spouse’s sleep styles are saying (and if necessary, how to bridge a sleep divide that’s too wide).

A great mattress for all sleeping positions is the Tempur memory foam mattress as it offers individual all over support and avoids you rolling together, unless you want to of course!

Tempur Leg Spacer is Help for Hurting Hips

Back pain and sleep complaints are a common combination. Slightly rarer, but just as difficult to live with, is sleeping with hip issues.

Hip pain can be experienced for a number of reasons, including arthritis in the hip joints or pregnancy, which widens the pelvis and makes it slightly less stable, potentially misaligning the hips.

Incorrectly spaced hips and knees can also be an issue for spine pain sufferers, making both problems worse and turning sleep time into a trial.

If you’re experiencing hip pain of any kind, see your doctor. She can advise you on physio, medications if necessary and yes, on sleep positions (this is a biggie). In our experience, for certain hip conditions a hip spacer pillow is also recommended. It can also be a simple help for spine alignment and create a better night’s sleep, even if one’s suffering is minimal.

Luckily, there’s Tempur (hooray, Tempur! What haven’t you thought of?). We love the Tempur leg spacer pillow. It conforms to your body yet offers support without “mushing” together as regular pillows often do. The cover is plush and yummy and is, well, just all about comfort. Give it a try and let us know what you think.

Kids, Sleep and Summertime

School is out, and the temptation is there to give in to your children’s demands to stay up “just a little later.” (And later…and later…and later.)

After all, they don’t need to be sharp the next day, even if the plan is to get up at a reasonable hour to attend a fun summertime activity. Who really needs sleep in the summer?

Kids do. At least nine hours of it, in fact, experts are saying Maintaining a regular sleep schedule is important as interrupted or unusual sleep can wreak havoc on a child’s growing body and could contribute to a lack of mental acuity during wakeful hours.

Your child isn’t in school, but he needs to be careful and reactive when walking or biking to the local swimming pool or to a friend’s house. So make sure he’s rested, sharp and ready for his day…whether it’s a challenging one or not. A bonus: your child will find the transition into the regular school year easier in the fall if he’s been on a regular sleep schedule.

It might be easier to tempt them to bed if they have a new mattress and we recommend Rest Assured Single Mattresses . Rest Assured… How apt!

A Cosy Rest on the Road: Sleep and Travel (Pillows)

Ouch! Air or road travel can be a real pain in the neck, particularly if it’s a long trip and will involve a nap. Let’s face it: we weren’t meant to fall asleep in a semi-crabbed, upright position. It’s unnatural. And painful.

For frequent travelers, the effects can be cumulative, with cricks, muscle spasms and the possibility of upper spine misalignment over time. Headaches are another frequent side effect of unsupported sleep during travel.

The next time you’re hitting the road (or the air), take along a supportive travel pillow. Choose a pillow that’s small enough that it fits comfortably beneath your neck. The pillow should conform to your spine without allowing you to sink right down into it. The idea is support with a little flexibility.

We love Tempur Travel Pillows for travel. The material springs back (without the use of actual springs, hooray) once you’re up and awake, yet conforms to your body’s needs when you’re sacked out. Next time you’re on the road, save your neck: bring along a great travel pillow.
